Reid History Our Founders, Liberty Reid and his wife Gloria
1948 In 1948 Liberty Reid was an office manager and purchasing agent in a local tool and die shop. He discovered there were numerous tools and parts that he could not obtain in a timely manner. This discovery inspired him to start Reid Tool Supply as a small business in his home on Baker St., with the help of his wife, Gloria.
Mr. Reid's vision was to have those hard-to-get tools and parts in inventory for immediate delivery. He lined up suppliers and published a 16-page catalog, which was mailed to 5,000 machine shops in the Midwest. From the very beginning, Reid Tool Supply focused on great customer service by providing hard-to-find merchandise on a timely basis.
1952 Reid Tool Supply moves to a newly constructed 40' x 40' warehouse/office on W. Delano Ave. 1954The business expands to include mill supplies for area businesses. The mill supply portion of the business grows into RTS Industrial Supply Company, a separate operating division of Reid Tool.
1964 A new facility is constructed on Temple St. to house the growing company. This building was eventually expanded to 28,000 sq. ft. Reid Tool Supply reached its first $100,000 sales month and its first million dollar sales year. 1981Reid Tool Supply moves into its present facility at 2265 Black Creek Rd. in the Port City Industrial Park (Muskegon, MI), with 48,000 sq. ft. of warehouse/office space. 1991RTS, the local industrial supply division, builds its own 16,500 sq. ft. facility on Sherman Blvd. 1992A new operating division, Liberty Tool Supply, is created to service industrial distributors throughout the United States, as well as international markets. 1993Reid Tool Supply doubles its warehouse space to accommodate its growing business. 1995Plow Parts Warehouse, a mail order distributor of snow plows and replacement snow plow parts, is acquired by Reid Tool as a wholly owned subsidiary. The name was later changed to Professional Parts Warehouse as the product focus expanded. Paul Reid establishes TQMI, a modification and manufacturing facility of tooling component items for Reid Tool Supply. 1997Reid Tool Supply adds an additional 4,200 sq. ft. of office space. United Sign Company is acquired by Reid Tool Supply as a wholly owned subsidiary. United Sign manufactures stock and custom signage, and sells signs, accessories and supplies through mail order and direct sales efforts.
Reid Tool Supply acquired a safety business in Traverse City, Michigan and changed its name to Reid Safety. 2004RTS Industrial Supply and Reid Tool Supply join under one roof to better serve all Reid customers. Grand Opening of Reid Safety Supply – Muskegon store. Official adoption of the Reid Entities logo and trademark. 2005Reid Tool Supply officially changed its name to Reid Supply Company to reflect its expanded offerings and wider industrial supply focus.
